Pugwash (The credit for starting the Pugwash movement goes mainly to Bertrand Russell. Early in 1955 he drafted the text of a manifesto drawing attention to the dangers resulting from the development of nuclear weapons and of the consequences of another war. This was to be signed by scientists from various countries, and in particular he was anxious that they should represent all shades of opinion.. The signatories to Russell's document were mainly Nobel Prize winners, in physics for the most part. One of the first to be approached was Albert Einstein, who signed the statement two days before his death, and it became known as the Russell-Einstein Manifesto. The functions of the organisation are (a) influencing governments (b) forming a channel of communication between scientists and (c) educating public opinion.) 14 Pugwash July 1963 - April 1969 15 Pugwash Committee meeting 1964 16 Pugwash Seminar, Canberra, 18-19 May 1968 17 Pugwash Group 1989 18 Pugwash Newsletter, vol 5 (2 & 3), October 1967 - vol 8 (4), April 1971.
