Professor Julie Campbell Secretary (Education and Public Awareness)

Professor Julie Campbell, FAA

Professor Campbell is currently the Director of the Centre for Research in Vascular Biology at the University of Queensland; Director, The Wesley Research Institute, Wesley Hospital, Brisbane; and NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow at the University of Queensland.

She has been a Fellow of the Academy since 2000 when she was elected for her seminal discovery that mature smooth muscle cells of the artery wall must undergo a reversible change in phenotype before they can divide. Her subsequent work has profoundly influenced concepts on the formation of atherosclerotic plaques and stimulated ideas on smooth muscle cell diversity.

Professor Campbell takes a major role in science education and organising national and international conferences and has been an invited speaker to major international meetings. She was Conference Chairman of the Xth International Vascular Biology Meeting held in Cairns in 1998. She is also the Chair of the Queensland Regional Group of Fellows of the Academy. Professor Campbell was the recipient, in 1995, of the prestigious Glaxo Wellcome Australia Award for her service to medical science.
