With the generous support of Professor Frank Fenner, FAA, FRS, and the late Mrs Fenner, the Academy has established a series of environmental conferences on the environment and conservation issues in Australia and its environs. The purpose of these conferences is to bring together those with relevant scientific, administrative and policy expertise to consider current environmental and conservation problems in Australia, thereby contributing to the formation of policies that can alleviate some of these problems.

Funding of up to $10,000 is provided. The supplementation of this sum is encouraged. One conference is funded annually. The Academy's Shine Dome is available free of charge, although caretaking charges apply for weekends and on weekdays from 5.00pm, and there is a preference for holding the conference in the Shine Dome unless the location proves unsuitable.

The organisers of approved conferences are responsible for the organisation of the conference, and the sponsoring scientific organisation(s) are responsible for the funding allocated to the conference.

Organisers are asked to make an undertaking on acceptance of an offer of funding from the Academy to call their conference a Fenner Conference on the Environment and to advertise it as such.

    • Wildlife Population Dynamics and Management
    • Integrating agricultural and environmental imperatives for a profitable and sustainable future
    • Urbanism, environment and health
    • Wildlife health
    • Understanding the population-environment debate: Bridging disciplinary divides
    • Agriculture for the Australian environment
    • Visions of future landscapes
    • Linking environment and economy through indicators and accounting systems

Expression of Intent to hold a 2014-15 Fenner Conference

Organisers are invited to submit a one page Expression of Intent which should indicate

  • the aims, value and timeliness of the conference, including an indication of support from the local scientific community and the importance for the conservation of Australia’s natural environment
  • provisional dates and venue
  • names of the organisers
  • a tentative program, including expected number of attendee and any known or invited speakers
  • a brief outline of anticipated budget

A short letter of support for the conference from the sponsoring scientific society/research institution should accompany the Expression of Intent.

Shortlist invited to submit second stage applications: 1 October 2013
Closing date for second stage applications: 1 December 2013
