Biographical note
Emeritus Professor Sir Robert Dickie Watt, MA, BSc (Agr), NDA (Hons), NDD, FAIRS.
Born 23 April 1881 and brought up on a ‘mixed’ farm in Ayrshire, Scotland with dairying as chief enterprise. From 16 to 19 years of age he worked on his father’s farm intending to be a farmer. From 19 to 24 years of age, he studied at Glasgow University and West of Scotland Agricultural College.

Awarded Carnegie Research Fellowship
1905-07:
Carried out research work at the world renowned Rothamsted Experimental Station
1910-46:
Professor of Agriculture at the University of Sydney, occupant of the first chair of Agriculture in any Australian university. Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture from 1920-46 (when he retired)
1960:
Knighted
National Diploma in Dairying
Outside Activities:
Member of the executive committee of the Advisory Council of Science and Industry, which planned the successful campaign against the prickly-pear
Chairman of the “Bunchytop Bananas” Committee which saved the banana industry from threatened extinction
Chairman of the Murray Lands Commission which resulted in the settlement of the successful Coomealla Irrigation Area
Member of the Sydney University Senate
Trustee of the Public Library of New South Wales for 30 years
Member of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and Chairman of the New South Wales State Committee for 20 years
Foundation member, past President, Fellow and honorary life member of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science
President of Section K of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science
President of the Royal Society of New South Wales
Member of the Executive of the Australian National Research Council for 30 years
