MS 085 – GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA
INTRODUCTION
Note: Boxes 35-53 were listed in 1986 by an archives student, David Campbell. The following introductory pages (the introduction, scope and contents note, history of the GSA and series description) were all written by him and have been included here as a general introduction the collection although some of the material relates specifically to these boxes.
The records of the Geological Society of Australia date back to 1953 when the society was formed. Previous Geological Societies in Australia were predominantly for amateurs (See Appendix 1: an article by David Branagan 1974). The files contain membership lists, minutes of meetings, correspondence to and from divisions and specialist groups; and general files that a professional society needs for looking after the interests of its members. It was not until 1960 that the Society established an office run by an Executive Officer (Ken Mosher) and an assistant secretary (Laurel Tuckwell).
The state branches produce a newsletter as well as central office producing the Society Journal. It is now called Australian Journal of Earth Sciences, but up until 1984 it was called Journal of the Geological Society of Australia. Special publications about the geology of each state and PNG have been produced. Much correspondence has resulted from the publishing aspect of the society.
Membership in 1974 was a little over 2,000; there are 3,300 members in 1986.
The extent of the records of the Society are now about 25 shelf metres in 53 boxes of varying sizes. The archives described in my finding aid were reduced from 21 to 19 double size archive boxes.
The finding aid produced by me follows the style already established by the Academy and starts at Box 35.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Geological Society of Australia was formed in 1953. Most of the archives described here date from 1960 (when the central office was opened) to the last batch, deposited March 1986. They include membership forms and cards, correspondence in and out, financial records of central office, state branches and specialist groups. Some years the records are more detailed than others depending on who had held office.
Newsletters are produced by each state branch therefore some correspondence about this is in the records. The professional journal the society publishes also adds much volume to the archives. Other professional functions of the society are the production of a Rules and Procedures Guide and the presentation of awards, including the Stillwell Award and the W R Browne Medal.

HISTORY OF THE GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA INC
From Branagan's article (Appendix 1) we can see the history of the Society's formation:
The idea of forming a geological society in Australia had been in the minds and discussions of a few geologists in the 1940's and a committee was set up by Section C at the 1947 ANZAAS Conference in Perth.
In 1951 the final moves were made to create a formal organisation.
A meeting of geologists held at the ANZAAS Conference in Brisbane in May 1951 voted to form a Geological Society in Australia and from this meeting the present Geological Society has evolved. An interim committee consisting of E S Hills (Chairman); C Teichert (Secretary); O A Jones (Treasurer); M F Glaessner (Editor); and B F Glenister (Newsletter Editor) spent 1951 drafting a constitution and in 1952 the Society was officially constituted.
The inside cover of their journal (Australian journal of earth sciences) has the current office bearers. Branagan points out that "one of the major reasons for the formation of the Society was the desire to ensure publication of papers on Australian geology."
State and Territory branches were established by 1953, each holding meetings and electing Councillors for the Annual Conferences. Branagan describes the Council and Executive structure:
The Society is directed by a council which meets at least annually - usually for a marathon two day session! Until 1973 the Council was composed essentially of councillors representing each division (each State and the ACT), but recently it was agreed that the separate specialist groups should be represented by Councillors. To avoid enlarging the Council unduly, Divisional representation has been adjusted. Each division with fewer than 300 members has one councillor, those above 300 have two councillors. Specialist groups with more than 50 members have council representation.
The Council, headed by the Society's President, defines Society policy and sets guidelines for its operation. The Council has two vice-presidents: the senior vice-president is the immediate past president, the junior vice-president is the potential president-elect. The Secretary and Treasurer of the Society are of course, councillors, and come from the same division as the President."
The day to day affairs of the society are handled by the Federal Executive, which consists of the President, vice-presidents, secretary and treasurer, editor, and local councillors. The Executive moves from division to division about every two years."
Continuity of organisation is maintained between successive executives through an executive officer (Ken Mosher) and a small office in Sydney, operated by assistant secretary Laurel Tuckwell.
The Society did not establish an office until 1960. Apart from the State groups there are also a number of specialist groups and geologists in the Hunter Valley (NSW) formed their own Branch of the NSW Division very early in the piece. Specialist groups cut across state boundaries for members.
In 1979 the Society became incorporated and changed its name to the present name. The Society logo was also altered, adding the word 'Incorporated' to the name in the circle.

SERIES DESCRIPTION
The collection is being added to irregularly and has not been sorted into series. The Basser Library's approach has not been one of series 1, series 2, etc., but a chronological arrangement and description of what is there. Any distinct material is kept in a box by itself, but a rigid series approach is not followed.
Furthermore, another reason why I did not totally rearrange the material allocated to me was a) space (I had only a table 2 metres by 1.5 metres available and all material had to be packed up before I left the Library, open mornings only, and b) there were 21 large (double Australian Archives boxes) of material to deal with.
I tried to keep 'like' material in separate boxes and also maintain the chronological approach. The series approach for each class of archives would cause problems when the next consignment was received. Original order was shown in many parts of the collection and this was maintained where possible.
On reflection, after typing the inventory, some rearrangement could be justified. It may have been more meaningful to rearrange all 53 boxes into a number of series of material that has accumulated over the past 30 years.
