Sir Rutherford Robertson was born in Melbourne on 29 September 1913, the son of the Reverend J Robertson. He received his education at the Carey Baptist School and at St Andrew's College,Christchurch, NZ and Sydney and Cambridge Universities. His major professional interest is in the fields of plant biology and botany; he is also concerned with the teaching of biology in schools. For his work in botany and biology he received several awards. Sir Rutherford has also been active in the promotion of science in the national and international arenas.
From 1939 to 1946 he was assistant and later lecturer in the School of Botany at the University of Sydney. In 1946, and till 1959, he was a research scientist with the CSIRO Division of Food Preservation. In 1959 he was appointed to the Executive of the CSIRO, a position he held until 1962. From 1957 to 1958 Sir Rutherford was Secretary (Biological Sciences) of the Australian Academy of Science.
In 1958-59 he was a Visiting Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Upon his return to Australia in 1959, he was, beginning in 1960, appointed to the post of Professor of Botany at the University of Adelaide. This position was held until 1969. The 1960s also saw an increase in Robertson's involvement in the promotion of the advancement of science at the national and international levels.
This is reflected in his appointments:
President of ANZAAS (1965)
Chairman of the Australian Research Grants Committee [ARGC] (1956-70)
This involvement continued throughout the 1970s and early 1980s.
Master of University House, Australian National University (1969-73)
President of the Australian Academy of Science (1970-74)
Director of the Research School of Biological Sciences, Australian National University (1973-78)
Deputy Chairman of the Australian Science and Technology Council [ASTEC] (1977-81)
Since 1984, Sir Rutherford has been Pro-Chancellor of the Australian National University.
Rutherford Robertson married Mary Helen Rogerson on 9 September 1937. They have one son, Robert James Robertson.
Some of Robertson's major publications are:
Protons, electrons, phosphorylation and active transport (1968)
The lively membranes (1983).
In addition he is the author and co-author of a number of journal articles.
