SWAN, John Melvin (1924 )
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
John Melvin Swan, DSc, PhD, FAA, FRACI, Emeritus Professor, Monash University. He was born in April 1924, the son of the late W E Swan. He was educated at Scotch College Melbourne, and at Melbourne and London Universities. On May 17, 1952 he married Ailsa, d. H Lowen, and has one son and three daughters. Ailsa died in 1998.
Professor Swan was a laboratory chemist at ICIANZ from 1941-44, and from 1943 to mid-1947 he undertook his PhD at Melbourne University. He was then a research scientist at the CSIRO Division of Protein Chemistry from 1949-60, and at the CSIRO Division of Organic Chemistry from 1961-65. In 1966 he was appointed as a Professor of Organic Chemistry at Monash University.
Professor Swan was Pro-Vice Chancellor at Monash University from 1971-75, and the Dean of the Faculty of Science from 1976-84. He was also the Congress Director at the ANZAAS Festival of Science in 1987.
Professor Swan has produced several publications, which include:

These notebooks are a smaller version of the laboratory notebooks in series 1. The majority of these were written during JMS's time at CSIRO (1949-65), and one notebook is from June 1943 when he was at the University of Melbourne.

This series contains some of the analytical results of experiments. It is not possible to determine whether the analytical results should be connected with JMS's Laboratory Notebooks or his 'Notebooks'. The analytical results are not dated.

Series 4. Other researchers' related laboratory notebooks
The first of these notebooks was compiled by Miss M E Davieson in her capacity as a research assistant. Judith A. Maynard compiled her work (vol. 1 to vol. 8) under the supervision of JMS at the CSIRO Division of Organic Chemistry; this work formed the basis of her thesis for her MSc, which was awarded by the University of Melbourne. Mr Phillip Ford's work was done under the direction of JMS over several vacations, 1963-65.
