Bernhard Hermann Neumann was born 15 October 1909.
Dr.Phil. University of Berlin. Left Germany August 1933 Ph.D. Cambridge. Married Hanna von Caemmerer 1938 (3 sons, 2 daughters). Lecturer Cardiff, Hull (1946-48) and Manchester (1948-61, later Reader). D.Sc. Manchester. Offered Foundation Chair of Mathematics in Research School of Physical Sciences, Australian National University, Canberra 1960 (took up appointment 1962) retired 1974. (A Department of Applied Mathematics was formed in the Research School in January 1971 with B.W. Ninham, FAA 1978, as Foundation Professor.)

He is also an accomplished musician and is noted for riding his bicycle, in all weathers. His first wife Hanna (1914-71) was Reader in his department 1963-64 and Professor of Pure Mathematics, School of General Studies, Australian National University 1964-1971. She died in Ottawa on 14 November 1971 while on a lecture tour of Canada. She had been elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1969 (see Biographical Memoir in the Records Vol 3 no.2 November 1975). Two of their sons, Peter and Walter, are professional mathematicians. The mathematician Michael Frederick Newman, who has been a member of both Hanna and Bernhard's departments, is a cousin once removed.

He married Dorothea Zeim in 1973.

Neumann died in Canberra on 20 October 2002.
