Andrew Reginald Howard (Andy) Cole has spent most of his working life at the University of Western Australia, where he was a Personal Professor of Physical Chemistry from 1969 until his retirement in 1989. He began his career there as Nuffield Research Fellow in Chemistry (1952-55), moving up to Senior Lecturer in Chemistry (1955-57) and Reader in Physical Chemistry (1958-68). He has been active in the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, serving terms as President of both the Western Australian Branch and the society as a whole and his work has been honoured by RACI with the award of the Archibald D Olle Prize in 1978 and the A E Leighton Memorial Medal in 1984. He has also served on the Council of the Australian Academy of Science (1979-82) and the Senate of the University of Western Australia (1980-84).
His research interests include high resolution near and far infrared and electronic spectroscopy of simple molecules, and chemical education.
