LOUGHHEAD, R E (1929-
Ralph Edwin Loughhead was born in Brisbane on 17 September 1929. He was educated
at the University of Sydney (BSc 1952, MSc 1953, DSc 1969). He was appointed to
the CSIRO Division of Physics as a Research Officer in July 1954 and was leader
of the Solar Physics group in the Division of Applied Physics from 1972 until
the solar physics program was terminated at the Division on 30 June 1987. He was
in charge of the Division's Solar Observatory at Culgoora and led the team
responsible for the construction of the 13 cm Fleurs photoheliograph; and was
also Scientific Assistant to the Division Chief from July 1986. He retired in
1988.
Dr Loughhead had an international reputation in solar physics, particularly for
his expertise on sunspots and solar granulation.
