ÖPIK, ARMIN ALEKSANDER, FAA (1898-1983)
Armin Aleksander Öpik was born on 24 June 1898, in Lontova, Estonia. He was
educated at the Estonian State University at Tartu, graduating in 1926 in
geology and mineralogy.
From 1930 to 1944 he was professor of geology and palaeontology at the Estonian
State University and was director of the University's geological institute and
museum.
In 1944, Öpik left Estonia ahead of the advancing Russian armies and spent the
next few years in displaced persons' camps in Germany. He came to Australia in
1948 to undertake a position in the then newly-established Commonwealth Bureau
of Mineral Resources, in Canberra, where he was for many years the Bureau's
senior palaeontologist. He remained at the Bureau as a geologist until his
retirement in 1964.
In Australia Öpik made a detailed study of the Cambrian and Early Ordovician
stratigraphy and palaeontology of northern Australia. BMR Journal acknowledged
his scientific contributions in 1985:
His discovery of the first Ordovician rocks in the Kimberleys in 1949 opened
up the Canning Basin to oil exploration ... [Öpik] extended the basic
Scandinavian palaeontological lineage, stretching from Carl von Linne,
through Dalman, Angelin, Linnarsson, Broger, and Tullberg, among others, to
a multidisciplinary approach. Hence, we see stratigraphy, biostratigraphy,
sedimentology, functional morphology and economic geology all integrated
during Öpik's working life prior to 1948. And this vast scientific platform,
unusual in the early decades of the 20th century, was brought to Australia, for
our mutual benefit.
Öpik's daughter, Nora Romot, has written that 'spending his childhood and
youth living at Kunda and Tallinn Harbour made him an ardent seafarer, a poet
romantic, fatalist and pacifist'.
He died in Canberra on 15 January 1983.

following:
Metal badge marked "INQUA III. WIEN 1936"
Piece of cut stone such as amber, wrapped in paper which has been
written on in pencil, possibly in Estonian
Brown object about 5 cm long, with one end gold plated and with
Chinese (?) characters on the brown portion
Object about 2.5 cm long, gold plated and with Chinese (?) characters.
This object has broken into two pieces.
