WILLIAM HAYES
1913-1994
Physician, microbiologist and geneticist. Hayes made major contributions in the field of genetics and molecular biology through the study of Salmonella, E. coli and sexuality in bacteria. He established research groups at Hammersmith Hospital in London and then at the University of Edinburgh and became Professor of Genetics at the Research School of Biological Sciences of the Australian National University in 1974. He later became Emeritus Professor in the Department of Botany.
He was the author of the influential book The Genetics of Bacteria and their Viruses, 1964.
