National Committee for Earth Sciences
The committee covers Earth science with particular focus on the solid earth, including the discovery, extraction, and sustainable use of its various resources, and recognising the complementary role of the National Committee for Earth System Science (NCESS) with its coverage of groundwater, the oceans, atmosphere and climate.
The National Committee for Earth Science aims to:
- provide strategic evidence-based advice on Earth sciences to the Academy and other bodies as required
- support scientific literacy and excellence in Earth science by engaging with researchers, professionals and relevant national organisations
- liaise with relevant international bodies, ensuring Australian involvement in international activities
- promote interdisciplinary collaboration and take a multi-disciplinary approach in providing advice to the Academy
Statement regarding a decline in funding of tertiary geoscience departments across Australia
In August 2021 the National Committee for Earth Sciences published a statement addressing the systematic reduction in staff members in geosciences departments in Australia in recent years.
