Facilities

The Australian Academy of Science's Shine Dome has been a Canberra landmark since its construction in 1959. Refurbished as part of the Centenary of Federation celebrations, the Shine Dome has excellent acoustics and the latest technological equipment and is located just a short walk from hotels, tourist attractions and city shops.

Floor plan of the Shine Dome

Rooms

The main auditorium, the Ian Wark Theatre, is suitable for meetings and lectures, and is equipped with up-to-date audiovisual equipment. The ground floor seats 150 in armchair comfort. The upper level has 34 seats with desk facilities plus bench seating to extend the total capacity of the theatre to 220.

The Jaeger Room offers additional space for morning and afternoon teas, lunches, and break-out groups.
It is also ideal for receptions, launches or cocktail parties. Up to 40 people can be seated for a small seminar, 60 for a formal dinner or up to 150 for a reception.

The Becker Room can seat 22 people for an executive meeting, training session or business lunch.

The Foyer is equipped with a registration desk and is ideal for displays associated with the function being held at the Dome.

Other facilities

Audio visual equipment
The Ian Wark Theatre is equipped with a fully integrated audiovisual system, with laptop interfaces, CD and DVD capability. Use of the following items is included in the hire fee.

  • Lapel microphones (2)
  • Podium microphones (4)
  • Roving microphones (6)
  • Laser pointer

Please note: If full access to the Academy's computer system is required for presentations a qualified audio visual technician, approved by the Academy, must be employed at the hirer's expense to operate the system. Hirers have the option of using laptop computers for their presentations which allows them to control all presentations from the podium of the theatre. If the laptop option is used, no audiovisual support can be given by Academy staff.

Internet
Wireless Internet access is available throughout the Dome. Conventional Internet access is available from ports located in the Becker Room.

Registration desk
A registration desk is located in the main foyer and hirers should arrange to have this occupied by their representatives at all time to ensure only authorised attendees gain access to the function.

Message board
There is a message board situated near the registration desk for messages to be displayed.

Photocopier
A photocopier is available, copies are charged at $0.30c each. Academy staff will advise the relevant access code.

Additional furniture
Folding tables, stackable chairs, white boards and flip chart holders are available upon request. Additional items required can be arranged by the Academy at the hirer’s expense.
