AUSTRALIA—GERMANY WORKSHOP ON BIODIVERSITY
The Shine Dome, 13-17 March 2006

Terrestrial vertebrate biodiversity
by Professor John Long, Head Sciences Department, Museum Victoria

Australia is one of the top 12 mega-diverse countries for biodiversity. A wealth of research work is under way to investigate the biodiversity of local terrestrial vertebrates, primarily using DNA barcoding techniques as well as landscape genetics analysis. Such work draws on the extensive faunal collections held in Australian museums and government collections. This talk reviews some of the key projects and highlights the need for comparisons with the fossil record as a basis for biodiversity modelling against extinction rates and habitat changes.
