AUSTRALIA - INDONESIA JOINT SYMPOSIUM IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Jakarta, 13-17 September 2006

Background

The Australia–Indonesia Joint Symposium in Science and Technology was supported by the Australian Government Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) and the Indonesian Ministry for Research and Technology (RISTEK) to increase linkages between researchers in both countries.

The symposium consisted of plenary sessions on Australian and Indonesian S&T strategies for the future, plus four workshops in the areas of biotechnology, agriculture/aquaculture, water and energy. The biotechnology and agriculture workshops focused on the early diagnosis of diseases and the energy and water workshops did so in relation to the centralisation and decentralisation of these commodities.

The symposium and workshops were expected to promote research cooperation with Australia and Indonesia, identify opportunities to further develop collaboration, and recommend courses of action to the Australia–Indonesia Joint Working Group in S&T that may arise as a result of deliberations at the symposium.

The event was organised by the Australian Academy of Science with assistance from the Australian Embassy in Jakarta and RISTEK.
