Quantum dots and nanowires for optoelectronic device applications
Professor Chennupati Jagadish, Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, Australian National University
Professor Chennupati Jagadish is an Australian Federation Fellow and Head of the Semiconductor
Optoelectronics and Nanotechnology Group in the Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering at
the Australian National University. He is also Convenor of the Australian Research Council Nanotechnology
Network. He is currently President-Elect of IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC) and also Chair of the IEEE Nano-
Optoelectronics and Nano-Photonics Technical Committee of NTC. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy
of Technological Sciences and Engineering and the Australian Academy of Science. Prof. Jagadish is also an
Associate Editor of IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology and served as an Associate Editor of Journal of
Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (2001-2005). He has strong collaborative links with Japan, in particular,
with Osaka Institute of Technology.
Quantum dots have great potential for optoelectronic and electronic device applications. Quantum dots of III-V compound semiconductors were grown by metal organic chemical vapour deposition. Structural and optical properties of these nanostructures will be discussed. Novel optoelectronic devices such as lasers and detectors based on quantum dots will be presented. Nanowires are considered as building blocks for the generation electronics and photonics. Nanowires obtained by vapour-liquid-solid growth have shown excellent structural and optical properties. Core-shell nanowires and heterostructure (radial and axial) nanowires and their potential applications will be discussed.
A brief overview of ARC Nanotechnology Network and its activities will be presented and opportunities for enhanced interactions between Australian and Japanese researchers in the field of nanotechnology will be discussed.
