Game On: Preparing our Biology and Biomedical Graduates for the Future

This two day forum on tertiary Biology and Biomedical Education will be held at The University of Sydney, 10−11 December 2012. The aim of the forum is to provide a further opportunity for the members of the discipline networks of CUBE, VIBE and Quantitative Skills (QS) to network across the biology and biomedical disciplines and to share resources and insights on learning and teaching activities.

We invite you to join us in extending collaborations on learning and teaching activities initiated at CUBE and VIBE discipline workshops.

Network updates, including those on the Australian Biology and Biomedical Learning Outcomes, will be presented and we will be seeking your guidance to plan for 2013 network activities. Network members will be showcasing and sharing good practice. A call for abstracts and posters will be sent soon.

A highlight of the forum will be The Quantitative Skills (QS) in Science project which will feature Kyle Seifert and Kaci Thompson from the United States who will discuss ways to assess biology/biomedical learning outcomes and highlight online quantitative resources for biology students.

The forum will be opened by Professor Stephen Simpson, ARC Laureate Fellow and Academic Director of the new Charles Perkins Centre at The University of Sydney and the keynote provided by Professor Marilyn Renfree FAA, Vice-President of the Australian Academy of Science and Secretary for Biological Sciences.

There will also be a range of speakers as well as group discussion activities around prioritising key challenges in the areas of biology and biomedical education. If you are actively involved in biology and/or biomedical education this is an important event that you should not miss.

Statement of support from the Australian Council of Deans of Science

Professor John Rice, ACDS Executive Director

‘The ACDS commends the work of VIBEnet, CUBEnet and QS in Science towards developing a national voice for the biosciences. Disciplines are fundamental contributors in addressing the major challenges posed by the rapidly changing face of university education. It is from discipline networks that the ACDS seeks expert and contextualised advice on national teaching and learning issues. The ACDS urges all those in the biosciences to attend ‘Game on!’ and contribute towards that national voice.’
