Opening
by Senator The Hon. Kim Carr

Kim Carr Senator Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, entered the Senate in 1993. He is a graduate of the University of Melbourne, with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), a Diploma of Education and a Master of Arts degree.

Before entering the Senate, he worked as a secondary school teacher and as a senior adviser to the Victorian Government.

He held a range of shadow portfolios during the previous Parliament, including acting as the Shadow Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research in 2003–04 and from December 2006 until the 2007 federal election.

He was sworn in as Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research in December 2007.
