AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE WORKSHOP 2008

Enhancing the quality of the experience of postdocs and early career researchers
The Shine Dome, Canberra, 14–15 February 2008

Session 4: Talking to students, colleagues, the media and the public; and
Session 6: Conclusions

Chair: Professor Philip Kuchel FAA

Philip Kuchel Philip Kuchel is a medical graduate from the University of Adelaide, with a PhD in physical biochemistry from the Australian National University. He is currently McCaughey Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Sydney. He uses nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in his research to study cells and proteins. Discoveries include defensin-like peptides in platypus venom; a ‘new’ enzyme that stereo-isomerizes the peptides; methods to measure rates of metabolic and membrane transport reactions on the sub-second time scale; and development of theoretical models of red blood cell metabolism. In 2002 he was winner of an inaugural Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Research Higher Degree Supervision.
