FENNER CONFERENCE ON THE ENVIRONMENT

Wildlife Population Dynamics and Management
Incorporating the 20th annual scientific meeting of the Australasian Wildlife Management Society
The Shine Dome, Canberra, 2–5 December 2007

Background to the conference

It is 30 years since Dr Graeme Caughley FAA published his best-known book, Analysis of Vertebrate Populations, which has been used as a university textbook around the world. Dr Caughley's research has provided a basis for kangaroo management in Australia, ungulate management in New Zealand, and aspects of elephant management in parts of southern Africa.

A Fenner Conference on the Environment will be held at the Academy's Shine Dome to honour Dr Caughley's contribution to wildlife research and management. The aims of the conference are to review topics in Dr Caughley’s research, to describe recent developments in the many fields of wildlife population dynamics and management since 1977, and to postulate on future research needs and directions in environmental and conservation problems in Australia and elsewhere.

About the Australasian Wildlife Management Society (AWMS)

The society is a forum for discussion on the scientific aspects of wildlife management in Australia and New Zealand. Dr Caughley was a President of AWMS and his Presidential address was later published as a landmark paper, Directions in conservation biology. In honour of his research, the Academy administers the Graeme Caughley Travelling Fellowship, and in memory of his contribution to AWMS, the Society periodically awards the Caughley medal for outstanding contributions to wildlife science and management.

The Fenner conference will incorporate the annual scientific meeting of AWMS. Up-to-date research on the topics will be reported to relevant scientists, wildlife management personnel and agencies, and key papers will be published in the scientific journal, Wildlife Research. Dr Caughley was a former chair of the journal's Editorial Advisory Committee, and published frequently in the journal.

The conference has the support of the Australian Academy of Science, Landcare Research and the AWMS in New Zealand, and the Institute for Applied Ecology and the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre at the University of Canberra.
