Shine Dome open day
Celebrating women in science
Saturday, 25 September 2010

The home of the Australian Academy of Science, the Shine Dome will open its doors to the public on Saturday 25 September from 10 am to 4 pm.
This year's open day will celebrate women in science, including displays and films on some of Australia's prominent women in science. Personal memorabilia and artefacts will be on display from the Academy's first female President, Dorothy Hill. She collected thousands of pieces of fossilised coral during frequent excursions in Queensland and several of the most beautiful specimens will be on exhibit. Learn about the L’Oréal Australia: For Women in Science awardees, a program in partnership with UNESCO and the Australian Academy of Science, that awards outstanding female scientists.
The open day will include talks by scientists that cover a range of topics. Professor Patrick De Deckker, winner of the Academy's 2010 Mawson medal, will discussCanberra's dust storms.Fellow of the Academy, Professor Marilyn Ball will explore the responses of plants to climate change. The winner of the 2010 L’Oréal Australia: For Women in Science fellowship, Dr Rowena Martin, will look at the causes of drug resistance in the human malaria parasite and how to overcome it.
Guided tours will highlight the many intriguing facets of the Shine Dome's architecture and footage of the construction of the heritage-listed Dome will also be shown. On display will be the fascinating collection of scientific artefacts housed in the Dome, including a handmade Union Jack flag from an expedition to the Magnetic South Pole and an original letter from explorer Sir Douglas Mawson about the Australasian Antarctic Expedition.
There will be children's entertainment by Questacon's Excited Particles, a sausage sizzle and much more.
