The Academy launched Science at the Shine Dome in conjunction with National Science Week and the Australian Science Festival. This three-day event, held from 2 to 4 May 2001, was open to the public.

Science at the Shine Dome included the following public activities:

About 20 new Academy Fellows each presented 12-minute talks about their research.
Thursday, 3 May
Awards and admission of new Fellows
Admission of Fellows, the Burnet Lecture and presentations by awardees.

Cracking the code – using the code: The Human Genome Project and its applications
This symposium looked at the impact of genomic research on society.
