Teachers program

The Australian Academy of Science offered a special program for teachers in conjunction with Science at the Shine Dome. Each State and Territory Catholic, Independent and State education authority was invited to send one representative. In addition, secondary science teachers were invited to apply for the Australian Academy of Science Awards, and all Victorian science teachers were invited to apply for the Department of Education, Employment and Training Science in Schools Awards.

Wednesday 1 May
New Fellows seminar
9.30am-4.00pm New Fellows seminar
17 new Academy Fellows presented 10-minute talks about their research.
6.00-8.30pm Informal dinner
Short presentations were made by young researchers.
Thursday 2 May
Awards and admission of new Fellows
10.00am-1.00pm Awards presentation
Admission of Fellows, the Flinders Lecture and presentations by awardees.
2.00-5.00pm Education workshop
Presentations were made by teachers who won the Australian Academy of Science Awards and the Victorian Department of Education, Employment and Training Science in Schools Awards.
7.00 for 7.30pm Annual dinner
Teachers were seated amongst Fellows and young researchers. The after dinner speaker was The Hon Dr Brendan Nelson MP, Minister for Education, Science and Training.

Transition to sustainability
8.30am-3.40pm Public symposium: Transition to sustainability
This symposium covered the social, environmental and economic aspects of sustainability.
