SCIENCE AT THE SHINE DOME canberra 5 - 7 may 2004

Australian Academy of Science Teacher Awards

The Academy sponsored awards for a teacher from each State and Territory to attend its annual Science at the Shine Dome in Canberra on 5-7 May 2004. This event included the New Fellows Seminar, awards presentation, education workshop and annual symposium. The Academy celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2004 and this was reflected in the topic of the symposium – A Celebration of Australian Science – which featured an elite group of outstanding young Australian scientists.

Those who attended:

  • learnt about the latest research across a range of science disciplines
  • met and spoke with renowned scientists and young researchers
  • exchanged ideas and curriculum materials with interstate colleagues.

The awards included:

  • free registration for all the Science at the Shine Dome events on 5-7 May
  • return airfares to Canberra
  • lunches and morning and afternoon teas on 5-7 May
  • a formal dinner on 6 May with Fellows of the Academy and an informal dinner with young researchers on 5 May
  • accommodation for the nights of 5 and 6 May (also 4 May for participants from Western Australia and the Northern Territory).

The awards were open to primary and secondary teachers. Selection was based on merit. Selection criteria included the applicant's interest and involvement in classroom teaching related to the symposium topic, their contributions to the profession of science teaching and their commitment to disseminating to colleagues the information gained at the symposium. Applicants or their schools were required to be members of their State or Territory Science Teachers Association.
