Early-career researchers program


The Australian Academy of Science offered a special program for early-career researchers, outlined below, in conjunction with Science at the Shine Dome. Those who attended:

  • learnt about the latest research across a range of science disciplines;
  • met and exchanged ideas with renowned scientists, science teachers and other early-career researchers; and
  • participated in a career development workshop.

The CSIRO, CRCs, universities and research organisations were invited to send representatives.


Schedule of events

WEDNESDAY, 2 MAY

9.30am-4.00pm

Matthew Flinders Lecture and New Fellows Seminar
Professor Peter Hall FAA FRS presented the 2007 Matthew Flinders Lecture. New Academy Fellows each presented 12-minute talks about their research, followed by opportunities for questions.
7.30-9.30pm Informal dinner
Short presentations by Academy Fellows, and a chance to chat in an informal environment.

THURSDAY, 3 MAY

9.30am-1.10pm

Awards presentation
Admission of New Fellows and presentations by Award winners.
2.30pm-5.00pm Career Development Workshop
Presentations on two themes – 'Probability errors and cognitive bias in science and everyday life' presented by Professor Simon Gandevia, and media and communication skills.
7.00 for 7.30pm Annual dinner
Early-career researchers were seated amongst Fellows and teachers.
After dinner speaker: His Excellency the Governor-General of Australia, Major General Jeffery (external link).

FRIDAY, 4 MAY
8.45am-4.00pm

Annual symposium
Development and evolution of higher cognition in animals
The symposium featured eminent Australian and overseas researchers.

Early-career researcher feedback from previous years.
