SCIENCE AT THE SHINE DOME canberra 2 - 4 may 2007

The Australian Academy of Science offered a special program for teachers, outlined below, in conjunction with Science at the Shine Dome. Those who attended:

  • learnt about the latest research across a range of science disciplines
  • met and talk with renowned scientists and young researchers
  • exchanged ideas and curriculum materials with interstate colleagues and
  • participated in a education workshop.

Catholic, Independent and State education authorities were invited to send representatives. In addition, teachers who received the Australian Academy of Science Teacher Awards also attended.

Wednesday 2 May
New Fellows seminar
9.30am-4.00pm Matthew Flinders Lecture and New Fellows Seminar
Professor Peter Hall FAA FRS presented the 2007 Matthew Flinders Lecture. New Academy Fellows each presented 12-minute talks about their research, followed by opportunities for questions.
7.30-9.30pm Informal dinner
Short presentations by Academy Fellows, and a chance to chat in an informal setting.
Thursday 3 May
Formal admission of new Fellows and awards presentation
9.30am-1.10pm Awards presentation
Admission of New Fellows and presentations by Award winners.
2.30pm-5.00pm
Education Workshop
Visit to the National Zoo and Aquarium, with presentations by staff – a prelude to the Annual Symposium on higher cognition in animals.
7.00 for 7.30pm Annual dinner
Teachers were seated amongst Fellows and young researchers.

Friday 4 May
Annual symposium
Development and evolution of higher cognition in animals
8.45am-4.00pm Annual symposium
The symposium featured eminent Australian and overseas researchers.
