Professor Alan Welsh
Professor, Centre for Mathematics and its Applications, Australian National University

Alan Welsh obtained a BSc with a University Medal in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Sydney in 1982 and obtained a PhD from the Australian National University (ANU) in 1985. He was an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago in the USA from 1984 to 1987 before he became a lecturer at the ANU. He held the Chair of Statistics at the University of Southampton in the UK from 2001 to 2003, and is currently at the ANU where he is the EJ Hannan Professor of Statistics. He is the current head of the Centre for Mathematics and its Applications. He was awarded the Moran Medal in 1990 and is a Fellow of the Institute for Mathematical Statistics and the American Statistical Association.

Modelling and analysis of clustered data

Clustered data are very common in practice, occurring whenever groups of units in a study are related or when the same units are observed several times. Alan presents simple examples of clustered data and discusses some issues which arise in the modelling and analysis of such data. In particular, he considers different possible models for clustered data, explores differences between them and discusses the implications of these differences. Alan will also discuss briefly the difference between analysis at the individual and at the cluster level.
