Workshop 1
Title: Probability errors and cognitive biases
Presenter: Professor Simon Gandevia FAA
NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow and Deputy Director, Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute
How logically do we think? Do we assess probability accurately? This informal workshop will explore the likelihood that we literally 'jump' to conclusions. Examples from science will be presented, including the insight from Charles Darwin. Possible explanations for our cognitive biases will be given. The presentation should be of broad interest both for everyday life and to better analyse the workings of science.
Workshop 2
Title: Scientists and the media
Presenter: Julian Cribb, Adjunct Professor, Science Communication, University of Technology Sydney and a fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE)
