Workshop 1

Title: Probability errors and cognitive biases
Presenter: Professor Simon Gandevia FAA
NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow and Deputy Director, Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute

How logically do we think? Do we assess probability accurately? This informal workshop will explore the likelihood that we literally 'jump' to conclusions. Examples from science will be presented, including the insight from Charles Darwin. Possible explanations for our cognitive biases will be given. The presentation should be of broad interest both for everyday life and to better analyse the workings of science.

Workshop 2

Title: Scientists and the media

Presenter: Julian Cribb, Adjunct Professor, Science Communication, University of Technology Sydney and a fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE)

  • why communicate science with the media
  • understanding the media: What they want from science
  • how to communicate effectively with the media: do's and don'ts
  • what to do when the media calls.
  • interviews and staying 'on message'
  • media releases and other methods
