Australian participation in International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (IRSES) Round 2

The Australian Academy of Science has awarded scientific grants totaling $200,000 to twelve leading Australian research groups to participate in the European Commission's new Marie Curie scheme called the Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (IRSES) Round 2.

Grants for international travel

Applications are invited for grants for short-term scientific visits to Europe, North America and Asia (China, Korea and Taiwan) in 2010, to foster collaborations between Australian and overseas researchers. Deadline for applications is Friday 26 February 2010.

ROUND FOUR OF THE AUSTRALIA-INDIA STRATEGIC RESEARCH FUND NOW OPEN

The Academy is very pleased to be able to advise that Round 4 of the AISRF is now open. Applications under the Indo-Australian S&T Fund and Indo-Australian Biotechnology Fund will be accepted until 5.00pm (Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time) on Thursday, 24 December 2009. 

Guidelines for Round 4 detailing the level of funding available, eligible expenses, and the application process, are now available on the AISRF website at https://grants.innovation.gov.au/AISRF/Pages/Guidelines.aspx

Go8 European Fellowships

The Group of Eight (Go8) offers eight annual fellowships to early-career researchers in Europe to work in Go8 universities for up to six months. Each Fellowship is worth AUD 20,000.

Academy's strong relationship with France recognised in awards

Former Executive Secretary, Professor Sue Serjeantson, and Manager for International Relations, Ms Nancy Pritchard, were made Officer and Knight, respectively, of the Order of Academic Palms by the French government at a ceremony at the Shine Dome.

Academy Fellows join giants of science with election to The Royal Society

Canberra scientists Professor Chris Goodnow and Dr Jeff Ellis, both Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science, have been elected as Fellows of the elite UK and Commonwealth academy of science The Royal Society.

President of the Australian Academy of Science elected to the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS).

President of the Australian Academy of Science, Professor Kurt Lambeck, has been elected a foreign associate of the prestigious US National Academy of Sciences (NAS).  Election to the NAS is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a scientist or engineer.

Professor Lambeck is Distinguished Professor of Geophysics at the Research School of Earth Sciences, Australian National University. His recent work has focused on aspects of sea level change and the history of the Earth’s ice sheets during past glacial cycles.

Robbert Dijkgraaf and Lu Yongxiang elected as co-chairs of the InterAcademy Council (IAC)

Amsterdam, 23 March 2009
The governing board of the IAC has elected Robbert Dijkgraaf, president of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Lu Yongxiang, president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as its co-chairs for the next four years. The IAC also elected a new board for 2009–13, which includes the president of the Australian Academy of Science, Professor Kurt Lambeck.
