International Programs

Australian Government International Science Linkages (ISL) program

The ISL program supports bilateral and multilateral international science relationships. The program consists of five components:
1. Competitive funding comprising of:

  • Competitive grants
  • Australia-China Special Fund for S&T Cooperation
  • French-Australian Science and Technology Program

2. Strategic Policy
3. Australia-Europe Research Collaboration Fund
4. ISL – Science Academies Program
5. ISL Humanities and Social Sciences Academies Program

ISL Science Academies Program
The ISL Science Academies Program (SAP) component of the program provides support for specific activities using the networks and expertise of the Australian Academy of Science (AAS) and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE).

The Science Academies Program comprises three elements:

International exchanges and fellowships
The Academy of Science offers grants-in-aid for Australian researchers from the science, engineering and technology community to undertake collaborative research in North America, Europe and Asia.

Frontiers of science and technology missions and workshops
The Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering offers assistance for scientific and technological missions and workshops to promote S&T collaboration.

The Sir Mark Oliphant International Frontiers of Science and Technology conferences
AAS and ATSE jointly administer the Sir Mark Oliphant International Frontiers of Science and Technology conference scheme, which supports two international conferences in the emerging sciences each year.

Australia-Europe Research Collaboration Fund
Under the Europe Fund component, $4 million of funding has been allocated to support activities in the period 2008–09 to 2010–11, including two allocations to the Australian Academy of Science:

  • $200,000 to support Australian involvement in the International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (IRSES). IRSES is also funded through the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7).
  • $120,000 to support Australian involvement with European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Actions. COST is one of the longest-running European instruments supporting cooperation among scientists and researchers across Europe and internationally.

Other ISL funds are managed by National ICT Australia, the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.
