SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH AND PROF DAVID BUCKINGHAM ELECTED TO AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE

Sir David Attenborough OM CH CVO CBE FAA FRS FZS, Richmond, Surrey, UK, and Professor David Buckingham CBE FAA FRS NAS, University of Cambridge, join a distinguished group of international scientists who have been elected Corresponding Members of the Australian Academy of Science.

Corresponding Members are eminent scientists residing overseas who have developed links with scientific institutes in Australia and maintain strong ties with Australian scientists.

Sir David Attenborough is acclaimed worldwide as a distinguished broadcaster, naturalist and environmentalist. For over fifty years he has made outstanding contributions to the promotion of science and science education through the writing, narrating and presentation of many highly regarded nature documentaries. Many scenes in his documentaries were made in collaboration with research scientists, including those in Australia.

His latest works have become increasingly outspoken on environmental issues and he is a tireless advocate for conservation and biodiversity.

Professor David Buckingham is an Australian scientist who is distinguished as a physical and theoretical chemist. He has made seminal contributions to our knowledge of optical, electric and magnetic properties of molecules, intermolecular forces and the asymmetrical properties of molecules.

David Buckingham has continuing strong connections with his native Australia, through mentoring a stream of Australian research students and postdoctoral associates visiting the University of Cambridge as well as through frequent scientific visits.
