LAUNCHING INTO A VERY BRIGHT FUTURE FOR PHYSICS
4 June 2007

The Australian Academy of Science will host a combined event to launch the first in the latest series of public lectures, Physics for the Future, and a ten-year plan for the Australian Synchrotron.

The combined event by the Academy highlights an exciting future for Australian researchers involved in quantum optics and synchrotron science.

Physics is behind many aspects of our lives including communication, entertainment, manufacturing and health.

The plan for the Australian Synchrotron was two years in the making and identifies opportunities for major advances in structural biology, medical imaging and therapy, pharmaceuticals, minerals processing and materials science, to name just a few.

The plan – which has been endorsed by three science academies – will be released by Federation Fellow Professor Keith Nugent.

The release of the plan coincides with and complements the first in a series of public lectures presented by leading Australian physicists.

Photons – quantum ideas that could influence your life, will be presented by Professor Hans Bachor, Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum-Atom Optics.

About 100 years ago the new idea of photons and quantisation of energy revolutionised physics and throughout the 20th century led to a remarkable expansion of technology.

All of us are now using results of optics and lasers every day in communication, entertainment and manufacturing. Soon we will be able to put the original concept of the quantum particle to practical use – optical quantum technologies will be part of our future.

Hans Bachor will trace the history of the photon and some of the people behind this scientific adventure, and show some of the new ideas that are currently being explored in research labs.
