ARC SUPPORT FOR YOUNG RESEARCHERS AT ACADEMY SYMPOSIUM
28 March 2000
The President of the Australian Academy of Science, Professor Brian Anderson, announced today that the Australian Research Council is sponsoring two awards for young researchers to participate in the Australian Academy of Science Symposium on Australia’s Science Future. The symposium is being held in Canberra on Wednesday and Thursday, 3-4 May 2000.
'The aim of the symposium is to assess the advances and opportunities in eight fields important to Australia’s future,' said Professor Anderson. 'These fields are changes of the global climate; mind and brain; energy; molecular structure and recognition; IT, telecommunications and control in the Web era; genetic engineering of plants and animals; the universe; and ageing.
'The Academy is particularly keen on having post-graduate students and post-doctoral fellows attend,' said Professor Anderson. 'In addition to promoting the ARC Awards for Young Researchers, I have approached the directors of CRCs, medical research institutes, universities and CSIRO divisions to encourage them to allocate funds for this purpose. We are structuring the symposium sessions with ample time for discussion so that these younger researchers can participate.'
The symposium program, speaker CVs and abstracts, registration form and accommodation information is on the Academy’s website at http://www.science.org.au/future. Information about the ARC Awards is also available on the website. Registration is $150 (full-time students $100), which includes lunch on both days.
The symposium will be a feature of both National Science Week and the Australian Science Festival. It is also part of the lead-up to activities celebrating the Centenary of Federation.
