TAKING THE CHANCE TO CHANGE
20 November 2000
The President of the Australian Academy of Science, Brian Anderson, today
endorsed the Chief Scientist's final report, The chance to change.
'Robin Batterham has correctly diagnosed Australia's situation. As a
country with a sound inheritance of science and technology we are being
allowed to fall behind in a world of rapid technological change.
'He has established beyond argument the links between a vigorous, focussed
research base, constant innovation, and the creation of national wealth and
welfare.
'I believe the Chief Scientists' recommendations are balanced, covering the
universities, the research institutes and industry. All sectors need to be
led and provoked to perform better for the sake of a prosperous and
sustainable future, and Government incentives are vital.
'He has also provided for new ways to strengthen the linkages between
research and innovation, through industry Chairs in universities, and by
placing university researchers in industry.
'The Government could not have asked for more insightful and practicable
advice.
'I look forward to strong action by the Government in the near future on
its Chief Scientist's advice.'
