ON HUMAN CLONING
16 March 1999

In 1998, the Academy initiated a project on human cloning with the aim of contributing to informed public debate. A steering group was formed comprising Professor John White, Dr Oliver Mayo, Professor Roger Short and Professor Philip Pettit with Professor Sue Serjeantson as consultant.

At its 4 February 1999 meeting, Council unanimously endorsed a position statement titled On Human Cloning. The key emphasis is the possibility of using cloning methods for therapeutic purposes. The policy issue is how to establish an ethical and regulatory framework which would enable appropriate research to this end.
