ACADEMY OF SCIENCE ANNOUNCES NEW EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
23 March 2001
The President of the Australian Academy of Science, Professor Brian
Anderson, today announced the appointment of Professor Sue Serjeantson, AO,
as the Academy's new Executive Secretary to replace Mr Peter Vallee. She
will begin on 2 April.
'Sue Serjeantson has had a distinguished career as a university researcher,
including time as Head of the Human Genetics Group and then Director of the
John Curtin School of Medical Research. For four years she was Director of
the Institute of Advanced Studies and a Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the ANU.
'More recently she has been a very effective President of FASTS and in that
capacity a member of the Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and
Innovation Council.
'Sue has already worked closely with the Academy as a consultant on two
important projects, the development of our statement on human cloning and
the review of our programs of support for international science
collaborations. That review is continuing.
'The Academy knew that it would be hard to fill Peter Vallee's shoes, but
we are delighted to have found someone of Sue's talent, experience and
personality to keep the Academy moving forward from strength to strength.'
