Dr Bowman has taken a broad approach to the science and management implications of woodlands, particularly in the tropics, and made a significant contribution at many levels. He has conducted field research in Tasmania and throughout northern Australia over the last 20 years, working with government, pastoral and indigenous land managers to improve the sophistication of ecological management, particularly by the use of fire.
His recently produced major scholarly works include a Tansley review entitled 'The impact of Aboriginal landscape burning on the Australian biota' and a Cambridge University Press book, Australian rainforests: Island of green in a land of fire. He has received international recognition for his publications as evidenced by his editorial input to major international journals and his invitation to work at institutions such as the Australian National University, the University of British Columbia, Harvard University (where he held the prestigious Charles Bullard Fellowship), Oxford University and Kyoto University.
Dr Bowman is an authoritative and passionate public speaker and is able to communicate his love of Australian landscapes to a range of audiences.
