TWO AUSTRALIAN SCIENTISTS ELECTED TO THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF LONDON
15 May 2001

Two Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science have been elected Fellows of the prestigious Royal Society. Each year up to 42 new Fellows are elected from the most distinguished scientists. Fellows are drawn from citizens of, and those normally resident in, British Commonwealth countries and the Irish Republic. Six Foreign Members have also been elected, drawn from other countries and one Honorary Fellow has been elected.

The new Fellows are Professor Mandyam Srinivasan and Professor Roger Tanner. Professor Srinivasan is Professor of Visual Sciences and Director of the Centre for Visual Science at the Australian National University, working on vision in animals and machines. Professor Tanner is P N Russell Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sydney specialising in applied mechanics, rheology and computation.

In congratulating the new Fellows, the Academy's President, Professor Brian Anderson, said 'It is a great pleasure to see such recognition of Australian scientists. Besides the honour of election to their national Academy, Professor Srinivasan and Professor Tanner have also been greatly honoured by their overseas peers'. The current Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Science includes 19% who are also Fellows of the Royal Society.
