Physics Decadal Plan 2012-2021: Building on excellence in Physics, Underpinning Australia’s Future

The Physics Decadal Plan 2012-2021: Building on Excellence in Physics was launched at the Shine Dome on 6 December 2012. It presents the Australian physics community’s strategic vision for the 10 years, from 2012–2021.

The Plan will ensue that the process of strategic investment in teaching and research in physics in Australia continues for the next 10 years, allowing Australia to build on present excellence, to remain a strong member of the world’s physics community and to enjoy the associated intellectual, economic and social rewards.

The Plan was prepared by Working Group of experts tasked by the Academy’s National Committee for Physics and chaired by Professor David Jamieson of the University of Melbourne.
The Plan consists of two documents:

  1. Physics Decadal Plan 2012-2021: Building on Excellence in Physics, Underpinning Australia’s Future
Contains a summary of the findings of the physics decadal plan process and provides the main recommendations for addressing the current issues identified within Australia’s physics community.
  2. Physics Decadal Plan 2012-2021 Research Report
Contains the background and foreground research from which the findings presented in the Physics Decadal Plan 2012-2021 have been drawn. The data in the Physics Decadal Plan 2012-2021 Research Report can also be used for benchmarking future changes in this field.

Funding for the Plan was provided by the Australian Research Council, the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Institute of Physics.
