Academy welcomes proposed science strategy

September 02, 2014

The Australian Academy of Science strongly supports a proposal for a long-term strategy for Australian science released today by the Chief Scientist.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics: Australia’s Future” looks at how to support science to meet the needs and goals of Australian society and its economy.

Academy President Professor Andrew Holmes said “Australian science has been crucial towards the success of this country. But without a long-term plan guiding scientists, governments and business, there are limits on our potential”.

“If we want take full advantage of our own future, we need an overall strategy to prioritise what the community and economy need from Australian science,” Professor Holmes said.

“Otherwise, complacency and lack of vision will leave our future up to pure luck.”

The report focuses on four key areas of Australian science; education, knowledge, innovation and influence. Within these areas it recommends ways to:

  • build competitiveness
  • support high quality education and training
  • maximise research potential and, strengthen international engagement

The recommendations also note the science strategies which have guided other countries, particularly Asian nations, leading to large economic and societal benefits.

In launching the recommendations today, the Chief Scientist Professor Ian Chubb pointed out that Australia is the only OECD country without a science or technology strategy.
