Academy’s celebration of science kicks off this week

4 May 2009

The Australian Academy of Science’s annual celebration, Science at the Shine Dome, runs this week at the Shine Dome from Wednesday 6 May to Friday 8 May.

This smorgasbord of science will bring over 300 delegates to Canberra, and shine a light on the great research achievements of some of Australia’s brightest minds.

Sixteen scientists from all fields of science will be admitted as Fellows of the Academy on Thursday and will speak on their cutting edge research on Wednesday. New Fellows and their topics are here: www.science.org.au/sats2009/nfs

Winners of the Academy’s 2009 career and early-career researcher awards will be presented with their medals and speak on their latest work on Thursday. Medal winners and their topics are here: www.science.org.au/sats2009/awards

The celebration also includes a wide ranging symposium on Friday, which this year is dedicated to evolution – of the Universe, planets, life and thought. The symposium is a tribute to the inspiration provided by Galileo and Darwin, and forms part of global celebrations for both science giants in 2009.

International guest speakers include Dr Olivia Judson, creator and star of the book and TV series Dr Tatiana’s sex advice to all creation speaking on the evolution of reproduction, Professor Mike Turner from the University of Chicago discussing the creation and evolution of the Universe, and Professor Euan Nisbet from the University of London discussing Darwin’s relevance to 21st century Earth science. The Shine Dome turns 50 on Wednesday and celebrations will include a series of short talks, displays of memorabilia, champagne and the cutting of a replica Dome cake from 5:00 – 6:30 pm.

The three day event also includes special career development programs for young researchers and science teachers.
