Fire, felling and carbon storage
6 June 2011
"The ecologically sustainable management of native forests cannot be achieved without also
managing fire in an ecologically sustainable way," says Australian Academy of Science
Fellow, Professor David Lindenmayer.
In the fourth of the Australian Academy of Science's popular public lectures dedicated to the
work of Professor Frank Fenner, Professor Lindenmayer will explore one of Australia's most
controversial forms of land and resource management.
The lecture, New perspectives on ecologically sustainable forest management, will include
discussion of bushfire preparation, post-fire salvage logging and the role of old growth forests
in carbon storage.
The challenges of achieving biological conservation and ecologically sustainable natural
resource management are crucial global issues and Professor Lindenmayer is recognised
internationally as a leader in this field.
He is Professor of Ecology and Conservation Science at the Australian National University's
Fenner School of Environment and Society.
