Nominations now open for prestigious science prizes

February 20, 2014

Nominations are now open for the 2015 Australian Academy of Science awards, including two new awards to honour scientific excellence.

Researchers are invited to apply for the first John Booker Medal for engineering science and the inaugural Thomas Davies Research Fund awards for marine, soil and plant biology research - as well as the recently created Nancy Millis Medal for women in science.

The Academy’s awards recognise both early career and lifetime achievements, and range from medals and lectures to travelling fellowships, research grants and conference support.

“It’s exciting to be able to introduce new Academy of Science awards” said Academy President Professor Suzanne Cory.

“Thanks to the Australian Deans of Engineering, we are pleased to honour the work of the late John Booker — one of the finest researchers of his generation working in the field of theoretical geomechanics.”

The Thomas Davies Fund research grants for research in marine, soil and plant biology were made possible through a generous philanthropic bequest from the estate of the late Thomas Lewis Davies.

“The Academy was delighted with the strong field of candidates for this year’s, inaugural Nancy Millis Medal which recognises outstanding young female research leaders in any area of science, and we look forward to receiving nominations of a similar calibre for 2015” Professor Cory said.

“I encourage scientists from around Australia to nominate for these and our other longstanding awards.”

The 2015 awards, fellowships and grants open for applications include:

Career awards

  • David Craig Medal (chemistry)
  • Hannan Medal (pure mathematics)
  • Jaeger Medal (Australian Earth sciences)
  • Thomas Ranken Lyle Medal (mathematics or physics)

Early- and Mid-Career awards (for researchers up to 15 years post-PhD)

  • John Booker Medal (engineering sciences)
  • Fenner Medal (biology – excluding biomedical sciences)
  • Gottschalk Medal (biomedical sciences)
  • Anton Hales Medal (Earth sciences)
  • Christopher Heyde Medal (pure mathematics)
  • Dorothy Hill Award (Earth sciences, reef sciences, marine geology and taxonomy)
  • Le Fèvre Memorial Prize (chemistry)
  • Nancy Millis Medal for Women in Science (any branch of the natural sciences)
  • Moran Medal (statistical science)
  • Pawsey Medal (physics)
  • Ruth Stephens Gani Medal (human genetics including clinical, molecular, population and epidemiological genetics and cytogenetics)

Research support

Five awards that provide grants for research are now open: the Douglas and Lola Douglas Scholarship in Medical Science, the WH Gladstone Population & Environment Fund, the Margaret Middleton Fund for endangered Australian native vertebrate animals, the Moran Award for History of Science Research and the Thomas Davies Research Fund for marine, soil and plant biology.

Travelling fellowships

There are two travelling fellowships open for nomination this year — the AK Head Travelling Scholarship for early- and mid-career mathematical scientists, and the Selby Travelling Fellowship for overseas scientists to visit Australian scientific centres.

Research conference funding

There are a further three awards to support research conferences aimed at advancing the development and application of science across a range of disciplines: the Boden Research Conference in the biological sciences, the Fenner Conference on the Environment, and the Elizabeth and Frederick White Research Conference in the physical sciences.

The closing date for the award nominations is 17 April and the closing date to apply for travel, conference and research support is 30 July 2014.
