Vanessa Woods' first encounter with science journalism was a furry little chimp called Adjore. She was being smuggled across the border of Uganda and Rwanda for the pet trade, her parents being killed by hunters. Vanessa wrote several articles for the national Ugandan newspaper on the problem of the pet trade, why chimp smuggling is bad, and why chimpanzees were worth saving (chimps are crop raiders and have a tense relationship with Ugandan farmers).

Since Adjore, Vanessa has strongly believed in the ability of science writing to reach a large number of people. She uses her scientific experience in Africa, Asia, and Antarctica to entertain and inform people about animals and ecosystems, and their interaction (and sometimes conflict) with people.

Vanessa has an MSc in Science Communication, a BA in Marine Science and a BA in English Literature.
