Early-career researchers program

The Australian Academy of Science offered a special program for early-career researchers, outlined below, in conjunction with Science at the Shine Dome. Those who attended:

  • learnt about the latest research across a range of science disciplines,
  • met and exchange ideas with renowned scientists, science teachers and other early-career researchers; and
  • participated in a seminar on media and communication, writing grant proposals and commercialisation of research and also heard about international collaboration.

The CSIRO, CRCs, universities and research institutions were invited to send representatives.

Wednesday 1 May
9.30am-4.00pm
New Fellows seminar
17 new Academy Fellows presented 10-minute talks about their research.
6.00-8.30pm Informal dinner
Short presentations were made by young researchers.
Thursday 2 May
10.00am-1.00pm
Awards presentation
Admission of Fellows, the Flinders Lecture and presentations by awardees.
2.00-5.00pm Career Development Workshop
Presentations were made on three themes – media and communication, writing grant proposals and commercialisation of research.
7.00 for 7.30pm AGM dinner
Early-career researchers were seated amongst Fellows and teachers. The after dinner speaker was The Hon Dr Brendan Nelson MP, Minister for Education, Science and Training.

8.30am-3.40pm
Public symposium: Transition to sustainability
This symposium covered the social, environmental and economic aspects of sustainability.
