Victorian Department of Education, Employment and Training 'Science in Schools' Awards for secondary teachers to attend Science at the Shine Dome

The Victorian Department of Education, Employment and Training 'Science in Schools' program sponsored awards for up to five government science teachers to attend the Australian Academy of Science's Science at the Shine Dome. This event comprised the New Fellows Seminar, awards presentation, education workshop and annual symposium. The topic of the symposium was Transition to sustainability.

Those who attended:

  • learnt about the latest research across a range of science disciplines;
  • met and spoke with renowned scientists and young researchers;
  • exchanged ideas and curriculum materials with interstate colleagues.

The awards included:

  • free registration for all the Science at the Shine Dome events, 1-3 May;
  • return airfares to Canberra;
  • lunches and morning and afternoon teas, 1-3 May;
  • a formal dinner on 2 May with Fellows of the Academy and an informal dinner with young researchers on 1 May;
  • shared accommodation with other teachers for the nights of 1 and 2 May.
The awards were open to Victorian government teachers of secondary science subjects. Selection was based on merit. Selection criteria included the applicant's interest and involvement in classroom teaching related to the symposium topic, their contributions to the profession of science teaching and their commitment to disseminating to colleagues the information gained at the symposium.

The Academy is an independent non-profit organisation, which recognises research excellence, advises government, promotes science education and public awareness and fosters international relations.
