The Academy is sponsoring awards for a teacher from each state and territory to attend its annual Science at the Shine Dome conference in Canberra on 2-4 May 2007. The conference activities include the New Fellows seminar, awards presentation, education workshop and annual symposium. The topic of the 2007 symposium is Development and evolution of higher cognition in animals.

Those who attend will

  • learn about the latest research across a range of science disciplines
  • meet and talk with renowned scientists and young researchers
  • exchange ideas and curriculum materials with interstate colleagues.
The award includes
  • free registration for all Science at the Shine Dome events on 2-4 May
  • return airfares to Canberra
  • lunches, morning and afternoon teas on 2-4 May
  • a formal dinner on 3 May with Fellows of the Academy and an informal dinner with young researchers on 2 May
  • accommodation for the nights of 2 and 3 May (also 1 May for awardees from Western Australia and the Northern Territory).
The awards are open to primary and secondary teachers. Selection will be based on merit. Selection criteria include the applicant’s interest in highlighting cutting-edge science in the classroom, their contribution to the profession of science teaching and commitment to disseminating to colleagues the information gained from the symposium. Applicants or their schools must be members of their state or territory Science Teachers Association.

Applications close Monday 12 March 2007. If selected, applications will need to arrange their own release from work, complete an evaluation at the end of the symposium, and provide a brief report by September 2007 on how they have disseminated information to professional colleagues. An article in their respective Science Teachers Association publication is also required.
