The Science by Doing Project Team

Professor Denis Goodrum
Project Director
Denis is on leave from the University of Canberra. He has been involved in many national and international activities in science education. In 1998 he was a visiting scholar at the National Research Council in Washington DC working on a project examining inquiry and the National Science Education Standards.
National projects for which Denis has been responsible include:
- Primary Investigations – a curriculum resource for primary schools with an associated professional learning model
- Status and Quality of Teaching and Learning of Science in Australian Schools
- Collaborative Australian Secondary Science Project (CASSP) that evaluated a teacher change model through the development of integrated curriculum and professional development resources.
- Science by Doing – concept plan 2006
- Australian School Science Education: National Action Plan
2008–12
- National Science Curriculum Framing Paper 2008
He has been a consultant for numerous projects including the Science Learning Objects for The Learning Federation, ASISTM, SEARS, NAP–SL and the WA Monitoring Standards.
He has extensive administrative experience in so far as he has carried out the roles of Head of Department, Head of School, and Dean of Faculty within the university sector.

Daniela Peressini
Administration
Daniela is on leave from the University of Canberra, where she started as an administrative officer with the Faculty of Education in 2000. Since 2001 Daniela has covered the role of assistant to the Dean of the Faculty. Daniela provides administrative/secretariat support to the project team in all areas of its work including organising, and producing minutes for, all meetings.

Amelia Druhan
Education Specialist
Amelia has experience in science teaching and administrative roles in the secondary school setting, and in the tertiary sector through tutoring roles. In 2005 her exemplary teaching performance in the secondary setting was recognised with the awarding of an ACT Department of Education and Training scholarship to undertake further study at Masters level. Amelia was part of the Science by Doing pilot team.

Louise Fogg
Education Specialist
Louise is on twelve month’s leave from the Northern Territory Department of Education. Louise has 25 years teaching experience in the Northern Territory and has worked as a project manager in Teaching, Learning and Standards, NT DET for the last six years focusing on curriculum, pedagogy and assessment at a system, school and classroom level. Louise has experience with digital resource development in collaboration with other agencies. She is currently completing a Masters in Education with an information technology focus and her interest is the design of online inquiry-based learning environments.

Marian Heard
Education Specialist
Marian is Programs Manager with CSIRO Education in Canberra where, in addition to Science by Doing, her responsibilities include the Scientists in Schools initiative, Double Helix Science Club and the CREativity in Science and Technology (CREST) Awards. Her services are being supplied by CSIRO as part of their commitment to the Science by Doing project. She has been involved with the project since its inception.
Marian has extensive experience in science education at a national level in Australia and was formerly Education and Public Awareness Manager at the Australian Academy of Science. In this role she initiated the Primary Connections project, which links science and literacy in primary schools.
She has experience as a secondary science teacher in chemistry, biology and junior science, is a member of the Science Teachers Association of Australia, and a former recipient of the Science Teachers Association of Queensland Award for Service to Science Education.
