About the role

This position sits within Future Earth Australia, which was founded by the Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) and is hosted by the Australian Academy of Science. It is a partnership of Australian universities, research institutes and industry, government and civil society working to advance sustainability and supports the Australian and Oceanic activities of Future Earth internationally.

Future Earth Australia is tasked with generating meaningful sustainable solutions to development and transformation issues by building collaborative research networks, linking researchers with policymakers, business and industry leaders, practitioners and community stakeholders. In doing so, Future Earth Australia provides both national and international platforms for Australian scientists to engage with leaders in policy, business, industry, civil society and community to co-produce knowledge and generate impactful actions.

In 2024 and 2025, this role will help foster improved international program linkages and drive the domestic policy agendas for Future Earth Australia. A key function will be to build and maintain relationships and profile through effective communication with a variety of audiences. This role will be supported by a Policy and Research Assistant and interns.

This position is part of a small, close-knit team, with many shared responsibilities. Collaboration is key. The role requires strong networking and partnership management skills and works closely with researchers, policy makers and community groups across Australia and globally. The position is available on a 12-month fixed-term contract, with possibility for extension. The role is part time (4 days per week) and based in Canberra. Requests for full-time and remote work will be considered.

Duties and responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of Future Earth Australia:

  • Assist with planning, organising and delivering major projects and activities to advance sustainability research and action in Australia and internationally
  • Take a leadership role in the implementation of our existing strategies
  • Delivery of key programs of Future Earth Australia under guidance of the Director
  • Assist in maintaining and extending productive relationships with stakeholders in government, industry, the community sector and industry
  • Program administration and oversight of operating procedures

Qualifications and experience

  • University degree or relevant experience relating to sustainability, climate change, and/or global change
  • Experience working across academic disciplines (natural and physical science, social sciences, humanities, etc.) as well as with non-academic forms of knowledge, including that of First Nations people
  • Experience with government processes and procedures is desirable

Selection criteria

  • Experience and engagement with sustainability programs and/or projects
  • Demonstrated success in managing all aspects of coordination and logistics for hybrid (in person and virtual) events
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to effectively work across global and cross-functional teams (which includes academia, researchers, policymakers, NGOs, funders, partners, etc.)
  • Outstanding organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • A commitment to workplace diversity, workplace participation, WHS and equity principles
